Lost Password - Factory Reset of the Netopia Router

NQG_013

If you have lost your password or need to reset your Netopia R-series Router to default settings before reconfiguring, all you need is an ordinary metal paperclip. Keep in mind that once the router is reset, all of your connection profiles and settings will need to be reconfigured.

Firmware Reference

  • v5.3.7   (and later) - 4000 Series
  • v4.8.2   (and later) - R-Series

After the Factory Reset

Telnet into the Netopia router's Main Menu at 192.168.1.1 (if using the default IP setting). If your network has a different IP addressing scheme, modify this accordingly. Click Here! for instructions on using telnet and Hyperterminal (serial connection).

Don't forget to press the Enter key to save any entries. Hitting the back space, delete or tab without first hitting enter will undo any changes.

The Esc key will take you back towards the main menu screen.

Once you have completed your configuration, you should reboot the Netopia to save and apply your changes.

  • Make sure the router is plugged in and turned on.
  • Turn the router over; with the front of the router (where the LED's are) facing you, you will see a small slot on the underside of the router about halfway back on the right.
  • Insert the metal paper clip (Tip: Don't unfold the paper clip) into the slot until it stops. You should hear a distinctive clicking sound from the modems. Remove the paper clip.
  • The router will now reboot itself and you should see the LED's cycle and run through the boot-up sequence.
  • The router is now at factory default settings as it was shipped. It will have an Ethernet IP Address of 192.168.1.1 with an Ethernet Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0, and will begin serving 100 DHCP IP addresses starting at 192.168.1.100.
