Release Notes

Latest News

Timbuktu Pro 8.0.1 News

New Features

  • Secure SSH Connections Timbuktu Pro now supports secure SSH connections between Macintosh computers running Timbuktu Pro version 8. SSH compression may also increase Timbuktu Pro performance.
  • Push Installation You may now "push" install Timbuktu Pro on the remote computers on your network which have enabled Remote Login. This process will also upgrade Timbuktu Pro on computers that are running a Timbuktu Pro version older than the version on your computer. You may also use the push-install feature to distribute Zones files, Timbuktu Pro preferences, site keys, and activation keys.
  • Rendezvous Integration Timbuktu Pro version 8 supports Apple's Rendezvous technology. When you start Timbuktu Pro, it automatically registers the host service with Rendezvous, which allows the remote users on your network to find your computer for Timbuktu Pro connections. On your computer, the Rendezvous tab in the New Connection window allows you to search for active Timbuktu Pro computers and connect without needing to enter the IP address.
  • Ask for Permission Enhancements You may now require your Registered Users to ask for permission before each connection. You will be able to allow or deny the incoming connection before it occurs.
  • Exchange Permission Enhancements Exchange service permissions have been improved. When remote users establish secure SSH connections to your computer, they will be granted the same file-system access privileges that are assigned to their Mac OS X user profile.

Timbuktu Pro 7.0.4 News

Timbuktu Pro 7.0.3 News

New Features and Fixes

  1. This version of Timbuktu Pro has been updated and optimized for integration with netOctopus version 5. The Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh installer tool is now included in the Shared Support folder.
  2. Error reporting has been improved.
  3. Timbuktu Pro no longer occasionally ignores successful UDP contacts.
  4. The QuickTime recording feature, which allows you to record screen-sharing sessions, has been significantly enhanced. You may now record the sounds played on the guest computer during the screen-sharing session. In addition:
    • You may now record QuickTime movies using compressors other than the Animation codec from Apple.
    • When recording a QuickTime movie, you now specify the name and location of the saved file before you begin recording. This allows you to save the recording in a location with more disk space or onto a server.
    • When you specify the save-file settings, you may also change the video and sound recording settings. In addition, your changes are saved for future recording sessions.
    • The cursor is once again recorded in QuickTime movies.
  5. Several other screen-sharing enhancements have also been made:
    • During screen-sharing sessions, clicking the right mouse button (right-clicking) now sends an old-style CTRL+click to host computers running older versions of Timbuktu Pro.
    • In the New Connection window, pressing CMD+ARROW switches connection tabs only if the SHIFT or OPTION keys are not also pressed. Now, when the guest computer switches monitors during a screen-sharing session, the connection tab is not accidentally changed on the host computer.
    • Autoscrolling performance on Jaguar computers has been significantly improved.
    • When you press the TAB key on the guest computer, it is now sent to the host computer even when Full Keyboard Access is turned on. System-menu keyboard commands are also sent to the host computer.
    • A 1.5-second delay has been added when you attempt to drag-and-drop from the screen-sharing window onto your desktop. This prevents "accidental" drag-and-drops. If you release the mouse button during the delay, drag-and-drop will not occur.
  6. When using AppleScript to retrieve host-computer information from the New Connection window, the platform is now reported correctly.
  7. The "Send and Stuff" AppleScript has been updated. It now works with Mac OS X and the current version of StuffIt Deluxe.
  8. In previous versions of Timbuktu Pro, Control sessions were occasionally terminated unexpectedly when you dragged the mouse and a multi-file Exchange session was occurring simultaneously. This no longer occurs.
  9. Some third-party USB camera drivers caused conflicts with the launch of Timbuktu Pro. This no longer occurs.
  10. Files greater than 2GB in size are now handled correctly during Send and Exchange sessions, and their file size is now displayed correctly.
  11. You may now use Timbuktu Pro to connect from a Macintosh computer to a Windows computer behind a Netopia R9100 router.

Timbuktu Pro 7.0 News

New Features and Fixes

  1. Timbuktu Pro now supports Mac OS X Panther (Mac OS X 10.3).
  2. Timbuktu Pro supports Fast User Switching on Mac OS X Panther. When you change users or log in as an additional user, all incoming and outgoing Timbuktu Pro connections are closed. You may immediately reconnect any Timbuktu Pro service.
  3. Timbuktu Pro now includes a new service, Profile. The Profile service allows you to automatically run the Apple System Profiler on a remote computer and return the results to your computer.
  4. The screen-sharing window has been enhanced. It now supports more grayscale and color-depth options, and scroll-wheel and multi-button mouse support is now included.
  5. The Preferences dialog box now includes the TCP Contact Port tab, which allows you to change the TCP port used for Timbuktu Pro traffic. This allows you to use more than one Timbuktu Pro host computer behind a NAT router, by directing traffic intended for a specific computer to a unique port on that computer.
  6. The Control/Observe tab in the Preferences dialog box now includes a new option, Lock Out This Computer's Keyboard and Mouse. When this option is selected, and the computer is hosting an incoming screen-sharing session, keyboard and mouse activity on the local computer will have no effect.
  7. The IP Locator tab in the Preferences dialog box now allows you to register your computer's external IP address -- for example, the IP address of a NAT router -- rather than the local or internal IP address, which may not be recognized outside your network.
  8. The TCP/IP Zones file no longer requires the forward slash (/) in the file name. TCPIP Zones is now an acceptable file name. Timbuktu Pro also recognizes an alias to the actual TCP/IP Zones file, which you may now place anywhere on your computer.
  9. The Timbuktu Pro activity log now records more Timbuktu Pro activity. In addition, the log file is stored in the default Mac OS X log-file folder, and you may view it with the Console application.
  10. The Exchange!Go To menu has been extended with the Mac OS X Go menu shortcuts: Home, Desktop, Favorites, and Applications.
  11. When the Only Accept Incoming Connections When Application Is Open option is selected on the General tab in the Preferences dialog box, Timbuktu Pro now runs as the logged-in user. It is no longer necessary to enter an administrator name and password when you run the application.

Timbuktu Pro 6.0.3 News

New Features and Fixes

  1. This release fixes an issue with the Host Relauncher that may have resulted in the following symptoms:
    • Excessive CPU consumption by the Host Relauncher process
    • Inability to reconnect to a Timbuktu Pro host computer after the user logs out of Mac OS X on that host
    • A -3260 error message when launching the Timbuktu Pro application
  2. A new Preferences option for Mac OS X allows you to specify the color depth your computer will use when hosting a screen-sharing session. You can increase screen-sharing performance by limiting color depth. Set the color depth with the Limit Number of Colors To pop-up menu on the Control/Look tab in the Preferences dialog box.
  3. The TCP/IP Zones file used by the TCP/IP Scanner no longer requires a specific location or file name. Instead, you can make an alias to the actual TCP/IP Zones file (the alias file must have the file name TCP/IP Zones) and place it in the required location. This allows the TCP/IP Zones file to be located anywhere on your computer, and allows Timbuktu Pro to share the file with netOctopus.

Timbuktu Pro 6.0.2 News

New Features

  • Timbuktu Pro's connection menu is now a system menu on Mac OS X. (It no longer "floats" on your Mac OS desktop) The Connection menu. The Connection menu appears on the right side of the Mac OS X menu bar anytime the Timbuktu Pro Host is running .
  • Timbuktu Pro's Send and Exchange features, on a Mac OS X host, will now set file and folder ownership according to how the Timbuktu Pro visitor connected instead of taking on root ownership.
    1. If the visitor connected as a Trusted Visitor, Timbuktu Pro will look at the Mac OS X system user list for a user with the same name as the Timbuktu Pro visitor. If it finds one, it will set the owner and group, of any files or folders created in the Send or Exchange session, to that user and that user's primary group.
    2. If there is not a matching system user, or if the Timbuktu visitor connected as a Public Visitor, with Ask for Permission, as a Temporary Visitor, or as an Administrator, Timbuktu will set the owner of the new file or folder to the first Admin user and the group to the admin group.
  • Send and Exchange performance has been improved, as has Intercom performance.
  • Dial Direct connections on Quicksilver Power Macintosh models will no longer fail (freeze Host).
  • Timbuktu Pro now allows the hard disk to sleep properly on OS X systems.
  • Problem fixed that caused repeated console messages when Mac OS X is booted in >console mode<

Timbuktu Pro 6.0.1 News

New Features

  • Full support for Mac OS 10.1. You must run this version of Timbuktu Pro if you are running Mac OS 10.1. The new version also runs on Mac OS 10.0.4.
  • Full support for Mac OS 8.6/9.x
  • The "Hide Desktop Picture or Pattern" setting in the screen-sharing preferences now works on Mac OS 10.1 (but not on Mac OS 10.0.4). However, this setting works slightly differently than on Mac OS 9. **See release notes for more details
  • The "Scan Aggressively for Screen Changes" option has been added to the "Control/Look" tab in the Preferences dialog box. When you select this option, screen changes are detected as they have been in previous versions of Timbuktu Pro. The CPU Meter is displayed at maximum usage when there is a screen-sharing guest connected to your computer. When this option is not selected, CPU usage is greatly reduced. However, movies and games are not captured as well during screen-sharing sessions. By default, this option is not selected.

Fixes

  • The file-sync scripts now work properly.
  • When you open a screen-sharing session with a Windows Timbuktu Pro host that has a screen larger than your screen, the borders of the screen-sharing window now display correctly.

You can turn off incoming access if you don't want anyone connecting to you, just as in older versions of Timbuktu.

New Features

To find your computer, a remote user simply types your email address into the New Connection window's TCP/IP Address box. The Email Locator setup is in the TCP/IP section of the Preferences under Setup.
  • Faster Screen Sharing

  • Screen Sharing has been speeded up significantly in 5.0. This was achieved by caching screen information. The first time a user brings up a particular screen on a remote system, it will come up at approximately the same speed as it did in 4.8. However, when a user brings up that same screen subsequently, it will come up much faster.
  • TCP/IP Scanner
The TCP/IP Scanner in the New Connection window lists the IP addresses and computer names of the Timbuktu Pro-compatible computers in your subnet so users can easily reach other systems on their network without having to know the other user's IP address.

If you'd like to extend the range of the TCP/IP scanner, you can do so using the TCP/IP Zones file. For information on how to use the TCP/IP Zones file, download 'How to Use and Modify the TCP/IP Scanner'.
