A corrupted Finder can cause the following error message: "Timbuktu Extension. Error Type 41."
A corrupted Finder can cause the following error message: "Timbuktu Extension. Error Type 41. Restart. " Restarting with the shift key held down, to disable all extensions, will result in the following error message: "Sorry, a System error occurred error type 41".
Error type 41 means "can't load the Finder", and it is likely that the Finder has been damaged. The problem is not related to Timbuktu, and the error message is not displayed by Timbuktu. It occurs because Timbuktu has a special kind of extension called an "application extension", or "appe", which is executed by the Mac OS just as it is also launching the Finder. The message "Timbuktu Extension Error Type 41" displayed by the Mac OS mentions the Timbuktu Extension because Timbuktu just happens to be launching at the same time as the Finder. In most instances, our customers who have called in to report this error had a system crash while working in another application, and had to do a forced restart. Upon restarting, the above error messages appeared, indicating a damaged Finder.
If you have a System CD or floppy with a System that is the same version as the one installed on your hard drive, you can replace your Finder. To do so, boot from your System CD or floppy, drag the corrupted Finder and corrupted Finder Preferences to the trash. Move the Finder from your System CD or floppy to the System folder on your hard drive. On restart, the Finder Preferences will be rebuilt. If you do not have a CD or floppy with a matching System, then you must do a clean system install. For more information, see Apple's technical document number 24431, Mac OS 8: Error Type 41.
