Downloading files to your Macintosh with Internet Explorer

TPM_067

To successfully download files to your Macintosh, you may need to change the security settings within your browser preferences if you are using Internet Explorer 4.5 and higher.

Situation:

A Macintosh user can't download files using Internet Explorer.

Solution:

To download files to your Macintosh, you may need to change your browser preferences if you are using Internet Explorer 4.5 and higher. Follow the steps below to change your Internet Explorer preferences.

  1. Within Internet Explorer, go to the Preferences menu, which is under the "Edit" menu, and highlight "Security Zones."
  2. Select 'Trusted sites zone' from the 'Zone' pop-up menu.
  3. Click on the "Add Sites" button.
  4. Click on "Add" below the 'Trusted sites zone' window, which takes you to the window titled "Add this web site to the zone:"
  5. In that window, add: ftp://ftp.netopia.com
  6. Click on OK.
  7. Click on "Add" below the "Add Sites" window again.
  8. In the "Add this web site to the zone" window, add: ftp://bbs.netopia.com
  9. Click on OK.
  10. Click on OK to leave the 'Trusted sites zone' window. You will find yourself back in the "Security Zones" window, "Trusted Sites" zone. Make sure 'Trusted sites zone' is still selected for 'Zone.'
  11. Set the security level for the "Trusted sites zone" to "Low."
  12. Click on OK to leave the "Preferences" menu.
  13. You should now be able to complete your download successfully.
  14. If you are concerned about having security set to "Low," return security to its previous setting after you have finished downloading your files.

If the problem persists, it is our recommendation that you try downloading via Netscape Communicator or by using an ftp client such as Fetch.
