'Timbuktu can't enable TCP/IP Incoming Access' message on restart

TPM_072

Users receive a 'Timbuktu can't enable Incoming TCP/IP Access' message on restart.

Problem:

Some users receive the message that 'Timbuktu can not enable Incoming TCP/IP Access' on restart. This happens to users who are connecting to the Internet via DSL using an ISP that provides PPPoE software such as MacPoET, PBI Enternet, or any other PPPoE software OR who are connecting via any other connection that isn't made until the user's system is fully restarted. This also happens to users of NTS TunnelBuilder's Client (VPN client).

What is PPPoE?

PPPoE is short for Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet. Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are using the PPPoE protocol to deliver Digital Subscriber Link (DSL) residential broadband Internet access to their customers. In these cases, the ISP provides a PPPoE client to the customer. In order for the customer to initiate a connection to the Internet, the customer must launch the PPPoE software (dialer), which connects the customer to the ISP. This is different from other DSL connections in that other DSL connections do not require the user to initiate a connection to the Internet.

During startup, Timbuktu checks the 'Connect via' field in the TCP/IP control panel. Based on what is found there, Timbuktu either does or does not load the upper layers of the TCP/IP stack. When the upper layers are loaded, Timbuktu assumes there's an existing connection to the Internet. If the upper layers of the TCP/IP stack are loaded and Timbuktu doesn't find a connection to the Internet and TCP/IP Incoming Access is selected in Timbuktu, users will get the message that Timbuktu can not enable Incoming TCP/IP Access.

Workaround:

The workaround is to leave TCP/IP Incoming Access unchecked until the system is connected to the Internet. Once the system has established a connection to the Internet, select TCP/IP Incoming Access. Before disconnecting from the Internet, make sure to deselect TCP/IP Incoming Access to avoid getting the same message.

Users who have an email address entered in their IP Locator Preferences will also get a message that there were problems communicating with findme.netopia.com when using PPPoE or VPN clients. Taking the email address out of the IP Locator Preferences will solve the problem.

Solution:

Our engineers are aware that this is an issue and are working on a fix. We expect to include that fix in a future version of Timbuktu.

Summary:

Timbuktu checks the 'Connect Via' field in the TCP/IP control panel on startup. Based on what's found there, Timbuktu either does or does not load the upper layers of the TCP/IP stack. If the upper layers of the TCP/IP stack are loaded, but no connection to the Internet is found at startup, Timbuktu will the display an error message.
