For Timbuktu Pro v7.x

The best way to install Timbuktu Pro v7.x on a remote machine is to install and configure Timbuktu Pro on your local Mac, copy all necessary files to the remote machine using File Sharing, then SSH into the remote box to activate Timbuktu.

  1. Browse to the Library:Preferences directory of your local machine. Using the Finder's Duplicate command, make a copy of the 'Netopia' folder. This duplicate folder will be used to return your local machine to its original settings.
  2. Configure Timbuktu Pro on your local Mac exactly as you would like the remote machine's configuration to be, including the desired Activation Key.
  3. If Personal File Sharing isn't already active on the remote machine, enable it now. You will also need to enable Remote Login.

-If the remote machine is running OS X Server, use Apple's remote administration tools to turn File Sharing and Remote Login on.

-If the remote machine is not running OS X server, SSH into the machine to turn on File Sharing if it's not active; if Remote Login is not already on, you will have to physically access the machine to activate that option.

  4. From your local machine, select the remote machine using the Finder "Go > Connect to Server..." menu item. Log in as a user with Administrative privileges.
  5. There are two important folders you need to copy from your local machine to the remote Mac:
    1. The "Timbuktu Pro" folder from the Applications directory
    2. The "Netopia" folder located in Library:Preferences

Copy these folders from your local machine to the corresponding directories of the remote machine.

  6. Now copy the TimbuktuInstaller command-line tool (TimbuktuInstaller.sit) to the remote machine. It can go anywhere you find convenient.

You can turn File Sharing off after copying the files.

  7. Hold down the Command and Option keys while selecting 'Open Timbuktu' from the Timbuktu Pro menu item to completely quit the Timbuktu Pro application.
  8. Drag the 'Netopia' folder in Library:Preferences folder to the Trash and rename the 'Netopia copy' folder 'Netopia'.
  9. Launch Timbuktu Pro, which will now reflect the local machine's original settings.
  10. Open a Terminal shell and SSH to the remote machine.
  11. Navigate to the directory where you placed the InstallTimbuktu command-line tool you copied in step 6.

    At the prompt, type:

    sudo ./TimbuktuInstaller "/Applications/Timbuktu Pro/Timbuktu Pro.app"

    and hit Return.

  12. You will be prompted for the admin password. Enter it, and after a few moments, the Timbuktu host will be running on the remote machine. Information about the launching of Timbuktu Pro will be logged to the Terminal window. After Timbuktu is active, you may close this Terminal window.

At this point, you may turn off remote login if you no longer need this feature. You may also delete the TimbukutInstaller command-line tool if you no longer need it.
